Giraffe Tongue Orchestra’s debut album Broken Lines is just as wacky as their name suggests. Featuring William DuVall of Alice In Chains, Ben Weinman of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Brent Hinds of Mastodon, Pete Griffin of Dethklok and Thomas Pridgen of The Mars Volta, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra are the definition of a super group. The band made their live debut at this summer’s Reading & Leeds Festival with well-received sets on The Pit stage.
Opening the album with a bang, Adapt or Die features the screeching, familiar hard rock vocal style of some of your favourite rock bands, relentless guitar shredding. And the album does not let up.
The band’s debut single, Crucifixion follows. This track has everything you could want from a rock song; crazy time signatures, insane drum sections, a catchy chorus, a atmospheric breakdown and of course those screeching guitars are back.
Just as the album seems to be going in one direction, the band throw a curve-ball with second single Blood Moon, a funky number which showcases the vocal talents of Alice In Chains front manWilliam DuVall. Radio-friendly and catchy, if any track on this album was going to be a rock radio hit- it would be this one.
Back To The Light’s closing showcases a killer guitar part and grungy vocal line. A definite highlight.
All We Have Is Now is the album’s ballad. It’s hardly Aerosmith classic I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing, but instead a track that shows the true extent of this band’s capabilities. With the members of the band originating from all different sub genres of rock, it is great to see a band who are taking advantage of their different talents to create an album full of tracks that are all unique but not to dissimilar to alienate the casual rock fan.
Everyone Gets Eve… sees the welcome return of the funk. This is definitely one of the band’s strong points. Different from radio-friendly banger Blood Moon, Everyone Gets Eve… experiments with new instruments. Most notably, the saxophone to create a song that is unpredictable right up to it’s abrupt ending.
There does seem to be an abundance of super-groups at the moment; Prophets of Rage, Hollywood Vampires, and Them Crooked Vultures to name but a few. None of these, however seem to have captured the hearts of the enthusiasts and fanatics in the rock community in a way which would make these bands festival headliners in their own right. What Giraffe Tongue Orchestra showcase in Broken Lines, unlike some of these other super groups we are seeing of late, is determination and hunger to succeed as their own new entity. Broken Lines feels like rock rejuvenated in a sector of the music market that seems to be short on new, arena-conquering, festival headlining artists.
With 2 Grammy awards and loads of Kerrang!, VH1 and Golden God awards between them, the members of supergroup Giraffe Tongue Orchestra have announced their collective debut with Broken Lines, which will be released in September on Party Smasher Inc/Cooking Vinyl.
The group consists of William DuVall of Alice In Chains, Ben Weinman of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Brent Hinds of Mastodon, Pete Griffin of Dethklok and Thomas Pridgen of The Mars Volta.
Brent said “During the time Mastodon was there for Soundwave, I was at the zoo in Sydney, Australia and was checking out the giraffes. They are amazing animals – one just grabbed a bunch of bananas from my hand with its tongue and peeled them with it as well – by the time the bananas got to its mouth, they were ready to be eaten. I saw Ben, who was at Soundwave too, and said ‘Man I think I found the name for our band,’ and told him the story.” Ben added “That giraffe made it happen… like us, he figured it out”
